maybe up the maxscript memory in preferences

else, try these:
remove isolated vertices
weld incrementally - .01, .1, 1, 10, etc - keep watchful eye for tweaky welds
collapse selected - I assigned it ctr-c cause I use it alot. config, UI
optomize

don't set the maxscript memory more than 64. you will have some issues if you do.

idk if there is an optimize modifier in gmax (i think thats what your using) but... in editable poly mode use edge selection and select edges you dont need and press the backsapce button. that will make your model look neater.

Optomize is in gmax, in the Modifiers List. Look at it's before/after # of faces on it's rollout panel. If it's still high, add another optomize (safer, i think, than upping Face Threshold, but you may have to up it anyway), or put a Relax modifire before it. 10000 is the suggested # of faces for a bsp
