Quote: Never, ever even after the end of time will we ever support download managers. Although the user may think they are great from the server side they are rude, selfish, greedy and are the evil spawn of Satan. Download managers open multiple sometimes thousands upon thousands of threads to the server to download a single file. They are the technical equivalent of a loud obnoxious child cutting in line in the store screaming ME, ME, ME, through a bullhorn set on maximum. We only allow 1 download thread at a time from our servers and people with download managers continually hammer away (open more and more threads) at our servers until most of them either get banned for hammering or have their download speed drastically reduced or the connection dropped.
Download managers are evil. We will never support them. So remember kids, although dl managers may seem nice to you, they are a webmasters worst nightmare.

because not only is he right as acidic rain, he proves a very good point and informs us of something that (im speaking for myself here) some of us might not have known.

Download managers or download accelerators are suppose to speed up downloading a file. They do this by opening many, many threads to the server to get many pieces of the file at a time. Think of it like a bucket brigade. With a normal download you have one bucket where you dip it in the water (the server) then pass it forward to the fire and dump it on (the user). What download managers do is create many lines with multiple smaller buckets so the total amount of water being passed to the fire is larger.
The problem is that with our and most servers there is only room to fill one bucket at time in the well so the other buckets clog up the opening trying to get water (the file) until they all come back empty.

Interesting analogy, Kiwi likes the idea of being fire, not so hot on the water though.

do all download managers actually speed up the file? the one i use doesnt seem to do that, it just allows me to continue a download if i accidently close the window, or if it times out a particularly big file. i dont use it for halomaps though, because the files are small enough that it is a waste of time to open the manager. and now that i know dennis is against them i guess thats all the more reason...

Does Firefox's download manager count? It's impossible to disable, I believe, and it comes with Firefox itself.

thats not a download manager, its the program firefox uses to download files. a download manager is an entirely seperate program you download and install that usually speeds up your download speeds by alot, depending on what kind of internet you have. i have wifi so all it did for me was keep my download from dying every 2 seconds.
